It is in the opinion of many the single finest piece of architecture in the City of Hillsboro. But the McDonald House was not always in the City. No it was in fact the home of the founder of the Oregon Nursery Company from where the now bustling hip and high tech shire of ORENCO gets it name. The company was founded in the early 1900’s and Malcolm McDonald and his partner Archibald McGill, both Scottish immigrants, erected two of the most magnificent homes in the Region.
McGill built his home first in about 1909 and McDonald followed with his being completed around 1912. The 7,500 SF (apx) masterpiece McDonald built was occupied by a few families on the original 90 Acres it sat upon before the site became a golf course in the 1950’s owned and operated by the Hillsboro Elks Lodge. The property overtime became a parcel frozen in time as massive for and maples were left to grow along the banks of Rock Creek and the meadows maintained for golfers and wildlife. A few years back the land was slated for development and the Elks sold out but thanks to the downturn of 2007 the 300 proposed roof top did not sprout up as planned.

The McDonald house was purchased by the City of Hillsboro and there are plans to bring it back to its former grandeur. The home will be thoughtfully redone with classrooms, a new kitchen, meeting facilities, ADA baths, and wonderful outdoor areas. As a member of the HLAC Committee I recently got a look at the renovation plans and thought many of you may enjoy seeing what is to become of the home. Would Malcolm McDonald be proud? Well the former socialite and his family would no doubt love seeing the legacy they created in a home of this magnitude being preserved for many future generations to see!
