Here is a story from Valerie Bunnell Wilson- From the Old Days in the Orenco Townsite- Written in the late 1950’s or Early 1960’s
Old man Karns was ragged and worn, like the chair he had used for the past 20 years. It had faithfully supported his tired well padded bones, only complaining about the weight it was forced to bear. His habit was to sit and spit with his old cronies around the pot bellied stove at the Orenco General store. His reputation for “teasin, and shootin the Bull” was never understated. Customers entering, knew they would leave with groceries, new tidbits of gossip, and at least one wink provoking story.
My grandmother always referred to Mr. Karns as “That old reprobate” making Grandad snicker over his morning bacon and eggs,
“Now Valda he’s just a harmless teaser.”
Knowing this still would not prepare me for my first confrontation with the old man.
